The Judges' Report:
This year we felt it was once again a gratifying number of entries in response to the annual National Competition, and quite a job to select the given number of prize-winners from such a large nunmber of participants
PROSE:
Again we say that standard formatting of the work was not applied in 90 percent of the entries.  The word FORMAT means the general physical appearance of a page, a book, newspaper or any typed piece of writing.  The required formatting from present day computers is on the toolbar of all computers and there is little excuse for any entry in a competition to be different to the other, and if the quality of formatting was ever considered in competition work, then 90% of all entries would be eliminated from many competitions.
Though we do not take spelling or punctuation into consideration when judging, it is sad to say that punctuation and spelling was also atrocious, and there was a large number of missing words in many of the entries.  Fromn this fact, it was easily seen that the majority of writers do not read their work over on completion, let alone a second reading, on completion of any corrections being applied.
However, the quality of story content overall was fairly consistent, and, of course, this makes for judging of such work hard in finding those writers whose story had a little more entertainment value than the other, or whose story was written just that little bit better than others.
POETRY:
We are pleased to say that the majority of poetry this year was exceptional, and enjoyable to read.  We were not surprised that 98% of all entries were Traditional Verse, written on a number of different subjects, with many having a topical theme.
Due again to the large number of entries, it took a long time and a number of short lists before we were able to choose the prize-winners.  Good meter and rhythm made the work of reading this genre all the more enjoyable.
In closing we take the opportunity to advise all would-be writers to re-read their work on completion, before even considering sending it off to a publisher or entering it in a competition.  For those whose formatting leaves much to be desired, click on 'Format' on the toolbar of your computer, and then click on 'Paragraph' and follow the directions.
